Beautif ' ull smells

Yesterday I wrote about the new aroma infused brochure produced to entice tourists and visitors to the attractions of York  but it got me thinking about the strength of a case that Hull could put together to produce its own version of a sensory guide to encourage people to dwell awhile within the city.

I have put these together under the title of Beautif ' ull smells and progressing through the year.

January. Just has to be the smell of the sea with Hull still at the forefront of fish processing even though the halcyon days of the trawler industry are long gone. Salt Cod to battered fish.

February. Industrial heritage odours from the old Cocoa Mill to Yeast, Needlers Sweet Sensations, Hull Brewery, paint from Akzo, chemical toilets from the caravan manufacturers.

March. Freshly cut wood from the acres of imported timber on the dock quays from Russia, Finland and Sweden destined for the nation's construction sites.

April. Revolution with Hull being the catalyst for the English Civil War with the refusal of entry for Charles Ist in this month in 1642. Smoke and Gunpowder.

May. The end of a successful Premier League Season for Hull City. Foot Long hot dogs, Pukka Pies and hot Bovril.

June. The alluring scents found in the landscaped and tended gardens of East Park, West Park, Pickering Park, Queens Gardens and Pearson Park.

July. The smell of Freedom. Nothing tastes so sweet. The role of William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery movement.

August. Festival time in the city. Oil from hand held lanterns, the distinctive smell of fireworks, outdoor barbecues and a cool breeze from the river.

September. More food with Bratwurst, Mulled Wine and smoked cheese from the European market in the city centre.

October. Candy Floss, Bob Carver Pattie, chips and peas, roasted chestnuts, coconut ice, pomegranate and all the olfactory stimulants of Hull Fair, the biggest travelling funfare in Europe if not The World.

November. More Plotters and Revolutionaries from the Gunpowder Plot. A pall of bonfire smoke and sulphur from firework celebrations.

December. Nordic smells from the Christmas Tree presented to the City and Christmas Fairs.
