English Lesson 12

So, already we are at the letter "L" in the compilation of definitions of English Words from the BBC Radio Series "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" which has been producing such nonsense since 1972. The definitive list has been the labour of love of Kevin Hale, a Superfan of the show and I have dipped in and out of it shamefully exploiting his hard work.

The words and definitions are confusing enough but I apologise, again, to any Students of the English Language amongst my readers for adding mayhem and misdirection to their struggle.

There is, understandably, some political incorrectness and a lot of toilet humour present but please remember that the words and meanings do date back some considerable years to an era when people just spoke their mind with no sympathy or empathy for the offence that may have been caused at the time and subsequently.

I like to think that we are better for the experience of such things and much more in tune with others.

Here goes;

Lymph- walking with a lisp

Liability- political skill

Lamination- New Zealand

Loggerheads- those addicted to sniffing lumberjacks

Lip Synch- the ultimate wash hand basin for women

Lactose- the effects of frostbite

Lampoon- the innovative gadget of an illuminated spoon

Libel- an Australian price tag

Logjam- constipation

Loofah- an outdoor toilet

Lay by- where to pull off the road for sex

Literacy- discarded pornography

Loophole- a very long toilet brush

Logarithm- the contraceptive method adopted by Catholic Woodsmen

Limpet- a little limp

Lackadaisical- a bicycle made for one

Luggage- how old your ears are

Leotard- a dim witted lion

Livery- a bit like liver

Likeness- a Highland enthusiast

Locomotion- a barely audible riot

Lyricist- a swelling experienced by songwriters

Lamentable- the Sunday Roast is ready to be served

Listless- unplanned food shopping

Loiter- what West Country folk use with their cigarettes

Laplander- clumsy exotic dancer

Leap Year- the life cycle of a Kangaroo

La vie en rose- a pink toilet

Looming- a porcelain toilet from a distant Chinese era

Lavish- a bit like a toilet

Lacquer- French for heart

Ladder- a bit like a lad

Lagoon- French equivalent to The Goons

Latitude- what the French have generally

Leaflet- a small leaf

Lollipop- a sugar daddy

Licence- knowing instinctively when to take a rest
