Yorks-Lincs Derby 1918

Ahead of tonight's Papa Johns Trophy Quarter Final football match between Hull City and Lincoln City (if it indeed goes ahead after a whole day of torrential rain in East Yorkshire) here is a newspaper report from the same fixture from December 1918. It was in the Midland Section of the football league with both teams languishing somewhat in 11th and 12th place respectively out of 16 teams.

Before 4000 spectators. Hull City were too strong for the Imps and although Lincoln were the first to score PARRISH netting after 40 minutes play-MCMANUS equalised after.

Lincoln suffered a severe handicap in losing the services of Ormiston who retired before half time when the scores were one all.

Subsequently Hull carried all before them and goals were registered for LEE, MCMANUS, MERCER and POTTER.

It took the Tigers some time to obtain the mastery and what for the accident which deprived the Imps of the services of Ormiston in the first half it is doubtful whether goals will have been gathered so freely.

It was at half back where Lincoln were handicapped. Their forwards were quite as capable as the home lot but they had fewer chances.

Bell was their most elusive player and frequently mastered Wrigglesworth without, however, ever defeating Hendry.

In the second half Lincoln went all to pieces but Trembling kept a wonderful goal and was in no way to blame for so many concessions.

RESULT;

HULL CITY............................................... 5

LINCOLN CITY.........................................1

As featured in the Sports Pages , "the green 'un" of the Sheffield Star.
